Roll up for the Mystery Tour Revival

Still from Goatlines by G. Murer

Back in June 2006, the ‘Can We Sleep in Your Barn Tonight?’ Mystery Tour band assembled in Virginia’s beautiful haggard agro-industrial Shenandoah Valley and then set off on country backroads toward a town called Dooms, with instruments, voices, obsolete recording devices, and some four-legged herbivorous co-listeners.

We didn’t arrive there.

For three days and nights we made our ways as wayfaring strangers along backroad ditches and blown-out overgrown trails, through barn-darks and cave mazes, to end up deep beneath the Valley’s surface in a grand cavernous finale. Two hundred feet underground, we sang and danced and twanged among the stalagmites and veils and hummed under the mineral blooms. The band dispersed after that last night in the cave twenty years ago, toward many different lands and ways of moving through and settling in places. So perhaps the question now, reviving some of the old Mystery Tour modes and methods of call-and-response we carried together down that road toward Dooms so many years ago—and weaving in some newfangled ones, too—is something like this:

Are We There Yet?

The ‘Are We There Yet?’ Mystery Tour Revival will roll up this June 20-21, 2026, in undisclosed locations around the Rural Alchemy Workshop (R.A.W.), and in a spinning spell of woolgathering and oceanic transpondance with Kultivator, Goldwell Open Air Museum in Amargosa Valley, Nevada, and other remote stations TBD.

Stay tuned.
